Who am I? Before I spiral into an existential crisis, let me reframe the question: what am I doing now, and how has it led me to blog?
Today, I am a university student in Singapore, taking a double major in environmental science and political science. While I have technically always been a STEM student, I realised I've often used science simply as a lens to appreciate the wonders of the world. From the detail in the smallest snowflake to the formation of the largest mountains, I believe science emphasises the intrinsic awe I already feel. Indeed, when I consider the very existence of our kind, I am filled with amazement. Gifted (and cursed) with rationality, humans paint the nuance in the world - we grey boundaries and give morality its colour and life.
Perhaps this nuance is what propels me to write. People come from different backgrounds, cultures and lived experiences. My opinions and biases will scarcely allow me to encapsulate the truth, but it contains my attempt to know more about this world. By reading and exposing myself to a range of different topics, I am forced to think, analyse and consider other perspectives. Through these short articles, I hope to spark lively discussions on the pertinent (and the not-so-pertinent), so that we can better dissect various concepts and realise our inherent biases.
Aside from this "grandeur" objective, I am writing simply for myself. Writing helps me to reflect on my learning and sharpen my thoughts. In times of stress or sadness, writing also presents an escape from the zoomed-in perspective of my life. It reminds me of how infinitely small I am in this universe, and just how limited my knowledge is. This acceptance is ironically liberating: to know that everything comes to pass - one moment a flower in bloom and the next withered away. There is beauty in beholding that moment in time, but also beauty in recognising its impermanence. Things come to pass, and that is more than okay.
I hope this blog can one day become an outlet for flourishing ideas - to build a community willing to share their true feelings and thoughts, in spite of our (valid) worry of offending. Let us learn and be taught together :)
